The NIC Brightspace Basics asynchronous online course provides a flexible professional learning experience specifically focused on mastering the technical intricacies of online course development within Brightspace. It equips instructors with practical insights and skills necessary to navigate the platform effectively, streamlining the course-building process and prioritizing quality student learning as the central focus.

WHAT IS THE COURSE CONTENT?

  • PART I: Developing Your Brightspace CourseJumpstart your Brightspace journey as you learn to navigate key tools and features. Learn how to set up and activate your course, tailoring it to your unique requirements. Discover the basics of adding and managing course materials, including various assessment types, while fostering effective communication with your students.
  • PART II: Building Assessments & Grading Students Ready to take your Brightspace grading and assessment game to the next level? In PART II of this course, you will learn how to set up and manage your Brightspace gradebook effectively and how to create, grade and provide feedback for a range of assessments such as quizzes, assignments and discussions. You will explore the full spectrum of Brightspace’s grading tools, encompassing grade schemes, rubrics and annotations.
  • PART III: Using CRAP Principles to Design Engaging Courses Keen to elevate your Brightspace content creation skills? In PART III of Brightspace Basics, you will learn how to apply CRAP design principles to maximize learning and accessibility. You will uncover how Contrast, Repetition, Alignment and Proximity enhance organization, consistency and clarity while exploring how the use of HTML templates ensures uniformity and accessibility across your courses as you create pages and add text, images or embedded video.

This course focuses on Brightspace skills for instructors at all stages of their online course building experience. By the end of the three parts, you will walk away with updated knowledge on navigating the Brightspace platform, building and grading online assessments efficiently and engaging learners while maximizing accessibility.
