History of SoTL in Canada

In Canada, the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE) is a national group who strives to be the preeminent national voice, and a world leader, for enhancing teaching and learning in higher education. It also supports increased awareness, research, dissemination, and application of scholarly approaches to teaching and learning.

STLHE began as a grassroots organization in 1981.

SoTL Canada is a constituency group in the STLHE community. SoTL Canada strives to:

  • Advocate for the importance and value of SoTL in its role of advancing post-secondary education, while emulating and emphasizing an equitable, diverse, and inclusive culture that embraces SoTL practices
  • Act as a liaison and mentoring body for those seeking SoTL guidance, partnership, and collaboration
  • Create and share SoTL resources with our community and wider SoTL audience
  • Engage and facilitate a community of SoTL scholars for the purposes of sharing resources, research, and knowledge
  • Support SoTL promotion within institutional structures at the macro, meso, and micro level
  • Collaborate with individuals and groups with diverse disciplinary backgrounds and inquiry approaches, who work towards the building of a global SoTL culture at the institutional, regional, national, and international levels
  • Support and encourage multiple approaches to the  dissemination of SoTL research and knowledge
