NEW Course: Essentials for Teaching and Learning in Post-Secondary Education

The NIC Essentials for Teaching and Learning in Post-Secondary Education course is a flexible professional learning experience that all instructors will find valuable and applicable to enhance their teaching practice by gaining new ideas to support quality student learning.

The Centre for Teaching and Learning Innovation (CTLI) is building a teaching and learning ‘certificate’ program to support all North Island College instructors in enhancing their teaching practices to elevate quality student learning. The program will have required courses, some elective courses, and will provide a NIC-built professional learning opportunity offered for both NIC instructors and those who are wanting to teach at NIC. More details on the full program will be shared soon – but the intent is to provide a made-at-NIC professional learning experience to up skill, enhance and develop teaching and learning competencies.

The Essentials for Teaching and Learning in Post-Secondary Education course is open for free registration to any current NIC instructor and is the first required course in this program – for our pilot offering in May and June 2024.

The course will provide you with evidence-based knowledge on foundational current topics related to post-secondary education and the opportunity to engage with instructors and peers. The course is six weeks long and begins May 6.

The course is a blend of synchronous (5 weekly live sessions) and asynchronous (most of the course) learning accessible via Brightspace allowing flexibility for busy schedules. The course focuses on teaching and learning practices for instructors at all stages of their teaching career.

By the end of the six weeks, you will walk away with updated knowledge on course design, active learning, assessment techniques, and more to take your teaching practice to the next level.

What are the Topics?
  1. Understanding Learners: Strategies to better understand and support students.
  2. Planning for Learning: Designing effective courses and aligning with course learning outcomes.
  3. Assessing Learners: Strategies for formative and summative assessment, ensuring meaningful feedback.
  4. Engaging Learners: Techniques to create dynamic, interactive learning experiences.
  5. Supporting Learners: Enhancing student learning, metacognition, and inclusive teaching.

  • Interactive Online Sessions: Engage in weekly live discussions during synchronous sessions scheduled on Wednesday evenings that will comprise about 1.5 hours each week for 5 weeks.
  • Facilitated Learning: Three NIC instructors working in the CTLI will facilitate the course to ensure a rich and engaging experience for all (Rachel Goodliffe, Natalie Ward and Meredith McEvoy)
