Kaltura Video Overview

As of January 2026, NIC is moving from the Canadian Regional Cloud to the US-based Kaltura SaaS, which will align NIC with all major platform updates. While we are aligned with the US SaaS, Canadian content will continue to be hosted on Canadian servers. Kaltura operates under provincial and federal shared service agreements for post-secondary institutions. NIC’s Kaltura instance was initially set up at UBC, integrated into Blackboard Learn, and soft-launched in May 2020. It was then moved to the Canadian Regional Cloud in Montreal in March 2022 and reintegrated into Brightspace. After training and configuration activities, a full setup of the MediaSpace front-end was completed in June 2020.

Many of the 25 post-secondary institutions in BC have their own MediaSpace installations, often integrated into their learning management systems. Like YouTube, MediaSpace allows users to add and share media and automatically adjusts video resolution for different devices. Unlike YouTube, MediaSpace has no advertisements and does not store content outside of Canada. It is fully BC FIPPA compliant.

NIC employees and students can undertake any of the following activities through My Media in Brightspace or through NIC MediaSpace. Students and faculty can share video with their classes via Brightspace’s Media Gallery or through an embedded video link.

This video provides an orientation to the use of Kaltura, what you might use it for and the basics of how to access and locate your collection for uploading and embedding media.
