Academic Integrity

The International Center for Academic Integrity defines academic integrity as “a commitment, even in the face of adversity, to six fundamental values: honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility and courage.”

Developing a culture of trust and academic integrity is crucial for ensuring the success of students and the credibility of their North Island College credentials. The NIC instructor plays a vital role in this process by setting expectations for ethical behaviour and promoting an environment where students feel comfortable to ask questions and engage in honest academic work.

By establishing a clear understanding of the NIC Policy 3-06 regarding academic integrity, NIC instructors can help students appreciate the importance of honesty in their studies and discourage them from engaging in unethical practices. Furthermore, a culture of trust and academic integrity fosters a positive learning environment, as students feel confident in their work and are less likely to be intimidated by their peers.

Sometimes instructors require a bit more understanding of the concepts and actions related to building a classroom culture of academic quality. Sometimes instructors have an inaccurate approach to academic integrity and as such bring forth unnecessary stress on students and themselves. To ensure we are all on the same page, CTLI has created a tutorial for NIC instructors to brush up on their knowledge about academic integrity and a collection of resources to learn more.

Faculty Academic Integrity Matters (AIM) TutoriaL

CTLI is delighted to present a newly developed a Faculty Academic Integrity Matters Tutorial. This is a learning resource specifically designed to address the changing landscape of ethical behaviour in post-secondary education.

As students increasingly explore and experiment with artificial intelligence and assistive technology, educators should continue to expand their understanding about the growing landscape of academic integrity.

This 90-minute tutorial offers faculty members a valuable tool to navigate the challenges posed by these advancements, providing practical strategies and insights to promote integrity and maintain high ethical standards in the classroom. It focuses on the importance of developing a culture of trust and respect with students in order to foster learning.

By engaging with this resource, faculty should be able to effectively navigate these complexities and foster a climate of fairness, cultural sensitivity, and ethical conduct within the academic community.

This outstanding module was designed and developed by Kim Pfeifer (CTLI) and Emma Courtney (CTLI) with feedback from Tony Trudel (Academic Integrity Chair) and Margaret Hearnden (past Academic Integrity Chair).
